This is so hurtful to me, but like, not in a bad way. I felt so sad almost physically painful to read through this work, son. Sonya? Son is funny, but you're not my son your Michael Jackson, Son.
I felt so crushed about how no matter how much it hurts, war doesn't care about you and your grave. This is what really hurt the most to read and I'm glad you were able to talk about this in such a way that you did, Sonya. Really hoping the best for you and thank you for this work. 🤍
Who are we if we did not descend into the cellar? Some parts are relatable, positive ones: summer vacation in the countryside in Eastern Europe. Avoiding going into dramatic details, more negative ones: pre-EU EE city.
Some favorite lines:
"but our experience tells us we have the most time we have ever experienced"
"i heard a lot of dogs crying in my childhood"
"you didn’t like it that I didn’t eat flesh anymore"
"most graves ruled by nature"
I tried to capture some of what you did here in my "Abattoir" poem, but yours has more soul, and it's the type of testimonial those circles in NYC give literary awards for.
Sometimes you read something and you are 99.9% sure that the author didn’t make any of it up. Some things are too specific to be fiction. Or maybe it was just the photos. But I think everything in that story was 99.9% true.
